As part of the Pre-Frieze Auction, Christie’s announce its major sale of 44 works from The Essl Collection to be sold in a stand-alone evening auction on Monday, 13th October 2014. The masterpieces collected over 50 years by Agnes and Karlheinz Essl include works by German Post-War and Contemporary Artists Gerhard Richter, George Baselitz, Martin Kippenberger, Sigmar Polke and Neo Rauch, with additional international artists Cindy Sherman, Frank Stella, Louise Bourgeois and Morris Louis, and Austrian artists Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Maria Lassnig.
With a pre-sale estimating these works from £40,000,000-60,000,000, reflects The Essl Museum’s passion in presenting contemporary art in Europe, a President of Christie’s EMERI, Jussi Pylkkänen says, “The exhibition of 44 paintings and sculptures will provide a fascinating overview of 50 years of work. It will be a great privilege to auctioneer the sale here at King Street in October at the beginning of Frieze Week.”
Among the selected from the , the highlights for Essl: 44 starts with five grand works from Sigmar Polke’s, and to Georg Baselitz’s story of self-portraiture in painting and sculpture, Martin Kippenberger’s work from the series Hand-Painted Pictures, Gerhard Richter’s exceptional abstract artwork with its spectrum of hues, which seems to be the consistent theme within the collection selections. Karlheinz Essl adds, “These artists steadily pursued their artistic path, continued to develop their methods with manifold experiments in form and technique, and produced results that continue to astonish the art world up to the present day.”
