Nickolas Muray image of FRIDA KAHLO WITH CHAVELA VARGAS 1945 gelatin silver print 3.25x 5-8 inch
The popular Mexican painter is known for her striking self-portraits. But a new exhibition at Throckmorton Fine Art looks at the artist in a new light. The Frida Kahlo Photograph exhibition will present images taken of the artist by 20 influential 20th century photographers. This interesting exhibition will turn the focus from the artwork to the artist. Some of the photographers who have turned their lens on Kahlo include Edward Weston, Dora Maar and Diego Rivera. All of which will be featured in the Frida Kahlo Photograph exhibition.
The new exhibition, entitled ‘Mirror Mirror…Frida Kahlo Photographs’, will provide an insight into the life of the artist, who saw herself in her father’s photography before discovering mirrors. Her father was a photographer and it is known that she saw and evaluated her looks from his photographs. Salomon Grimberg, Frida Kahlo expert, stated that the photographs “became the inseparable companions that provided her with a sense of self”. This makes the exhibition even more poignant in that sense as it is clear the artist valued her image. Kahlo was also known as one of the most popular figures in Mexico and was treated with the same level of stardom, if not more, as some of the movie stars of the time.
It is set to be a major year for Kahlo, as a number of other prominent exhibitions will also be taking place. The Detroit Institute of Arts are currently presenting a show that focuses on the year Kahlo and Rivera spent in Detroit, during the creation of Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals. There will also be another New York exhibition that coincides with this one. The New York Botanical Garden’s exhibition will recreate the artist’s garden and studios known as La Casa Azul. Throckmorton will be lending several photographs to this exhibition along with their own vintage photographs on display.
