The Story

Griffin Gallery, in collaboration with Bristol-based Antlers presents The Tragedy of Landscape, an exhibiiotn which brings together the work of six contemporary artists to re-examine the Romantic Landscape genre from a contemporary perspective.

The Tragedy of Landscape presents a group exhibition of works by Ambrosine Allen, Juliette Losq, Reece Jones, Wieland Payer, Anouk Mercier and Geoff Diego Litherland who, each in their own way, seek to re-approach notions of the Romantic Landscape within their practice. The artists share a common interest in the landscape genre and pursue a journey of subversion, challenging the perceived notions of landscape. The viewers are invited to probe what lurks behind the idylls we are presented with and think beyond the anaesthetised, beautified view of the natural world. The work often alludes to something more sinister, masqueraded by an uncanny projection of the familiar.
